Auto Shop Buildings

Using Metal Buildings for an Auto Repair Shop

There are many different reasons why you might want to use a steel building for an auto repair shop. These buildings can quickly and easily be constructed just about anywhere, so as long as you have a level area, you can put down a foundation and set up your auto shop in very little time and with little trouble.

The Setup

However, before you select an area for your auto shop, you’ll need to make certain it meets your needs. First of all, you’ll need to have a cement slab for the foundation rather than a wooden foundation since you’ll have heavy vehicles driving in and out of the building. Second, you’ll want to make sure your building is positioned so that drivers can easily get their vehicles into and out of the shop.

The Building

Metal buildings are very flexible with their layout, so you’ll be able to customize how your building looks. This means you can decide where the overhead doors are and how large the office/waiting area is. You’ll want to make certain you have enough space to work within the shop itself, so you will want to have some space between the overhead doors. Some auto shops also have doors on either side so that cars can be pulled all the way through. You’ll need to look at the pros and cons of having such a setup to see if it’s right for you.

The Advantages

Besides cost and quick build time, metal buildings have a few other advantages that make them ideal for auto repair shops. Because the walls are made from metal, there’s less likelihood of any type of damage if oil and other liquids splatter on them. With a wooden or even a brick building, some of the fluids found in vehicles could begin to damage the walls. Metal auto shops also do not need support structures like other types of buildings do. This means you won’t have to place any structural columns or load bearing walls throughout your shop. It can be completely open, which makes it easier to maneuver cars into it and get around them. There are a number of different styles of buildings you can use for your auto repair shop. Those with sloped sides are generally not used for this type of building because there’s a lot of wasted space around the sides. However, buildings with straight sides that then later curve or angle upwards do provide a good amount of space, something that is important when raising cars up to look underneath them.
